The Tub Nobody Has Used in Years

Open It Up
Take the tub out and the room reads a size larger straight away. Glass instead of a curtain, tile instead of a moulded surround, a floor you can walk onto rather than climb into. It is easier to clean, easier to use, and it is the change people say they should have made years earlier.

Decisions That Shape the Price
Will removing the tub hurt my resale value?
The honest answer, and it depends on one thing. If this is the only tub in the house, keep a tub somewhere. Buyers with small children look for at least one. If you have another bathroom with a tub, converting this one costs you nothing, and most buyers now prefer a proper walk-in shower to a tub they will never fill. We will tell you which situation you are in on the visit.
Curb or curbless
Curbless looks better and is far easier to walk into, but it needs the subfloor recessed, which depends on the direction and depth of your floor joists. Not every house allows it. We check before we quote it.
Tiled pan or acrylic base
A tiled pan looks better and costs more. An acrylic base is faster, cheaper and perfectly good. Both get the same waterproofing underneath.
Glass
A single fixed panel is the cheapest and keeps the room most open. A sliding door suits tight rooms. A full enclosure with a hinged door costs the most.
Does the drain have to move?
A tub drain sits at one end of the tub. A shower drain sits centre, or in a linear channel against the wall. Moving it means opening the floor, which adds time and cost. Sometimes we can design around it.
The bench
A built-in bench is what turns this into a shower you can still use in twenty years. Worth doing now while the wall is open.
Waterproofing
Membrane behind every tile and under the base. It is the part you never see and the part that fails first when somebody skips it.
